Thinking logically through emotions may seem like the hardest thing to do but it is actually doable if you put your mind to it. Despite the feelings of fear and anxiety that seem to shake us up every now and then, we can train our minds to stay rational. Social media and news headlines often trigger mixed feelings that leave us confounded. We do not know how to think through such feelings because they overwhelm us. And, we often end up doing irrational things. But, it is imperative to have control over such feelings and develop the power to think rationally. You need to be able to use logic even when you may be experiencing feelings that are overpowering. Here are some ways you can think logically through emotions:

  • The best way to think rationally is to take a moment’s pause and breathe deep. This helps you understand what is happening around you or to you. You have to realize that what you are feeling is basically a response to your thoughts. So, if your understanding of something is right you are alright, but, if it isn’t, you may misunderstand and overreact. This is why you need to give yourself some time to organize your thoughts and then interpret a situation at hand.
  • You will notice that anxiety, fear, and anger are very powerful emotions and they can get so overwhelming at times that you cannot pause and breathe. You find it impossible to think reasonably when faced with such a situation. When something like this happens, the best decision is to step away from the situation. You must remove yourself to assess what your correct response should be and think well through the situation. You need to ask yourself if there is another way to look at things that you might have missed out. You may have wrongly made certain assumptions or unintentionally misread the situation.

  • Child logic is when you think emotionally and disguise it with flawed logic. A typical example is when we strive for perfection knowing full well every human is flawed and imperfect. When you set very high expectations and fail to achieve these, you end up feeling shame, hopeless, frustrated, and angry. You need to set realistic expectations and achievable goals for yourself and those around you. Feelings of sorrow or disappointment can never be eliminated completely, but if you can think practically, you can avoid feeling unnecessarily angry or unhappy.
  • Before reacting to any situation, you need to think through all your possible responses. You must also understand what the consequences of each reaction could be. Your job is to evaluate these effects to see whether these will bring you closer to your end-goal or move you away from it further. It will also help you understand whether staying angry or forgetting and letting go of the anger is more beneficial under the circumstances.

To conclude, emotions are never “good” or “bad”. Usually they do not need to be evaluated. Your job is to look at facts; understand that you have the power to observe something without emotional bias. When you judge thoughts, you experience feelings of shame or guilt. While you cannot control what your mind thinks of, you can control how you respond to these.
